This summer I organized a Japanese play group for caretakers and their children 1-6 years old to meet once a week at a playground near our house. The program consisted of arts & crafts, parachutes, sing-a-long, and story time. Every week we had between ten to twenty groups show up. After the play group, which met from 10AM to noon, we would have a picnic nearby until it was nap time for the kids. We made sock puppets, played with clay, made fireworks using hand paint, made windmills and phones out of paper cups and even celebrated Tanabata. It was a way for me to socialize with other Japanese mothers and organize fun things to do with our kids during summer vacation. The picture below was taken at the end of our last play date. I won't be involved but a couple other mothers from the group will be continuing the group in the fall, as well. 今年の夏は近くの公園で日系家族のための１歳～６歳のお子さんと保護者のためのプレイグループを企画しました。 週一回午前１０時～１２時までクラフト作り、パラシュート遊び、お歌の時間、絵本の読み聞かせを含んだ毎週盛り沢山のイベントでした。 毎週１０～２０組ほど参加していただきました。 プレイグループの後は近くの広場でピクニックをしてお昼寝の時間まで一緒に遊びました。 クラフトでは靴下の人形、粘土遊び、絵の具を手に塗って花火を作ったり、紙コップで風車や電話を作ったり、七夕には笹に短冊を飾ったりして楽しみました。 他の日本人と交流を持ちながら、夏休みの間子供達に楽しい思い出をいっぱい作ってもらうことができました。 下の写真は最後の集まりの時に撮りました。 私は主催から外れますが、お手伝いしてくださったお母さんたちが今後引き継いでくれることになりました。 時間が空いた時はまた参加したいと思います。
