We did it again. Every year there's a big parade in Manhattan that's televised all over the country. It's the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade that's sponsored by the Macy's department store. It's been an annual event for over a hundred years and a Thanksgiving tradition. Because it's such a big event, in order to get good views we need to leave the house by 6 am and save a spot hours before the show. Last year we took my father and some visitors from out of town but thought it would be the last time. But, we had different visitors this year from France and the UK so we decided to do it once again. Turns out this year was the coldest Thanksgiving recorded in history. It was so very cold. But, we got great seats and I'm sure the kids will remember it for the rest of their lives. 今年もやりました！毎年テレビで全国放送される有名なパレードがマンハッタンで行われます。 メイシーズ百貨店がスポンサーするメイシーズ感謝祭パレード（Macy's Thanksgiving Parade)です。 100年以上の歴史を誇り今ではアメリカの感謝祭文化の一環です。 盛大イベントのため良い席を確保するため、家を午前6時に出てパレードが始まる２時間前から場所取りをします。 去年は私の父親と友達がNYに遊びに来ていたので、人生で初めてパレードに行きました。 楽しかったですが、やりきった感があったので今年は行かない予定だったのですが、 今年は別の友達がフランスとイギリスから来ていたので頑張って行くことにしました。 今年は史上最低気温を記録したとっても寒い感謝祭でした。 寒かったですが、とってもいい席が取れて子供達にとっても思い出深い経験になりました。

In November, Asahi-Shuzo, the company that makes DASSAI announced that they will be building a brewery in New York to make a new American-born sake. Due to some lucky happenstance, I had the honor of interpreting for the groundbreaking ceremony of DASSAI brewery in New York. DASSAI sake is one of the most famous sake in Japan. It got some attention in America when Prime Minister Abe gifted a few bottles to former-President Obama during his visit to Washington DC in 2015. They had the groundbreaking ceremony in Hyde Park, where the brewery is to be built and had a ceremony in Manhattan. I attended both and did my best to interpret during both events. I was very nervous but also had a great time meeting new people and drinking the best sake I have ever tasted. 「獺祭」という日本酒で有名な会社がニューヨークで酒蔵を作り、アメリカ生まれのお酒を作ることになりました。 ご縁があり、その酒蔵の起工式の通訳をさせていただきました。 2015年に安倍総理がアメリカにいらした際にオバマ元大統領に「獺祭」を渡されたということでアメリカでも注目を浴びたお酒だそうです。 マンハッタンから２時間ほどのところにあるハイド・パークに酒蔵を立てることになっています。 ハイド・パークで起工式とマンハッタンで懇親会が開かれました。 どちらとも参加し、頑張って通訳をさせていただきました。 緊張しましたが、美味しいお酒を飲みながらいろんな方とお会いできてとても貴重な体験をさせていただきました。

My daughter is in fourth grade. Next year this time, we will have to be submitting our choices for middle schools to the Department of Education to determine which school she can get into. We don't live in a district with good schools, so I am hoping to find a school outside of our area. Middle schools accept students from outside of their district but each school seems to have different criteria for what they look for in students. Some common things are attendance in fourth grade, their fourth quarter grades in fourth grade, and state test scores. Some schools have their own exams or interviews and some require students to write an essay. Applications are due in December and schools only give tours in the fall so some of my fellow class parents and I have started touring schools this year so that we can see as many schools as possible before making our decision. I went to a school that had classes from 1st thru 12th grade so I didn't have to worry about touring schools. This feels like a college search. So much pressure for parents, both in Japan and in the States. 娘は今4年生です。来年この時期私たちは娘の中学校の進学手続きをしなくてはなりません。 残念ながら今住んでいる学区は好ましくなく、学区外の学校で受け入れてくれる学校を探さなければいけません。 学区外に通わせるのは小学校ほど難しくないと聞きますが、どの学校も進学に必要なものが異なるそうです。 4年生の成績、4年生の出席、標準テストの成績。中には面接やエッセイの提出がある学校もあります。 申請の締め切りは12月で学校の面談は秋にしか行わないので、今年の秋から中学校のツアーに通ったり資料集めを始めています。 自分は小学校から高校卒業まで同じ学校に通ったので異常に感じるのですが、日本も大変だと聞きます。皆さん、どうですか。

This year my daughter started reading the Harry Potter books and we have been watching all the movies as she finishes each book. Some of you may know from a previous post that my family and I went to Universal Studios Orlando this summer where they have The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. With so much Harry Potter in our life right now, it made sense for us to dress up as Harry Potter for Halloween. My son was Harry, my daughter was Hermione, I was Professor McGonagall and my husband was a dementor. We all did a great job getting into character and it was a great way to end the year with a theme that we began at the beginning of the year. 娘が今年に入ってからハリーポッターのシリーズを読み始め、各本を読み終えては映画を家族で見ています。 前回のコラムでも書きましたが、今年の夏はフロリダ州にあるユニバーサル・スタジオに行ってきました。 フロリダ州のユニバーサルスタジオにはハリーポッターの世界が再現されており、 ハリーポッターのアトラクションを満喫して来たばかりだったのでハロウィンも家族団らんでハリーポッターのキャラクターを 選びました。息子は主役のハリー・ポッター、娘はヒロイン役のハーマイオ二ー、私はマクゴナガル先生、そして夫は吸魂鬼のディメンターでした。 皆それぞれキャラクターになりきって一年をまとめる楽しいイベントになりました。

My son turned five years old and we had a birthday picnic at Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Many of his friends showed up to enjoy the beautiful early autumn weather. The leaves have started to fall and the kids had a great time playing with balls and chasing each other around. Birthday parties can be an expensive event. I couldn't find anything less than $700 to rent a space. Last year we had the party at home but it got too loud with all the little kids running around. Fortunately, my son's birthday is during a time where it's not too hot or too cold to go to the park so I feel like we got lucky that we have this option to have birthday parties at the park. 息子が5歳になり、ブルックリンのプロスペクト・パークで誕生日会をしました。 たくさんのお友達が参加し、秋の始まりを感じながら楽しい一日を過ごしました。 紅葉が始まり、ボール遊びや駆けっこをして遊びました。日本の現状がどうかは分かりませんが、アメリカでは子供の誕生日会は意外とお金がかかります。 私が探した中でも場所台で最低＄700（約7万円）掛かりました。 去年は家でパーティーをしたのですが子供が大勢走り回って大騒ぎだったので今年は別の場所と考え、思いついたのが公園でした。 幸い息子の誕生日は寒すぎず、暑すぎない9月生まれなので公園でパーティーをすることが出来て良かったです。

In the previous column, I wrote about the strict laws and views in America about unsupervised children. In reaction to this view, there is a new movement called "free-range parenting." "Free-range" is a term that refers to livestock that are allowed to roam freely in an open space as opposed to cages, which is the norm. So, free-range parenting has been adopted as a philosophy of parents who believe that their children have the right to roam free, without adult supervision. Last year a law was passed in Utah that supported a parent's right to free-range parenting. The idea is still very controversial but I think its good that people are questioning the norm and take the time to decide what is best for their children. We all know our children better than strangers and some children mature faster than others. Giving them some independence builds character, confidence and problem solving skills. 前回のコラムで監視されていない子供の保護者に対しての厳しい法律について書きました。 この考え方に対して反発して始まった運動が「フリー・レンジ・ペアテリング（free-range parenting）」です。 フリー・レンジは檻の中では無く、鶏や牛を広い農園で自由に歩くことが許されている家畜方法から来ています。 つまり、子どもは常に大人の監視の下で移動するのではなく、自由に家や近所を探検させることが子供の発達にとって良いという考え方です。 この考え方は徐々に広まっています。 去年ユタ州で初めてのフリーレンジペアテリングの法律が可決されました。 この考え方はまだ多く議論されている話題ではありますが、常識を考え直すことは良いことだと思います。 子供は一人ひとり育つ速さも違いますし、育つ環境も違います。安全な環境で独立心を育てるのは子供の成長にとって自信と問題解決能力を育てます。 ここは親の判断を優先するべきところだと私は思います。みなさんはどう考えますか。

My friend, who lives in suburban New York, has three children ages 6, 4 years old and a 9 month old. Her oldest is in nursery school and she's a stay-at-home mom to watch the younger two. One day she stopped at a post office to drop off a package before it was time to pick up her oldest at school. Her younger two children were sleeping in the back of the car. She left the windows open and ran into the post office for a few minutes. When she returned a few minutes later, there was a police man waiting to take her children away from her for child neglect. She was escorted to the courthouse and after much convincing, the judge allowed her to keep her children but she was not to be left alone with her children until further notice. In America, the laws are ambiguous about what age a child can be left alone and when there are restrictions, it varies by state. However, 12 years old seems to be an age where Americans feel comfortable to leave their children alone in the house without adult supervision. Any younger and parents are at risk to be arrested or their children to be taken away for neglect. I remember watching a TV show in Japan called "My first shopping" Where a camera crew follows children as young as 5 years old running an errand for their mother in their neighborhood. In America, it would be unthinkable. We live half a mile from my children's school. In Japan, they would walk to school by themselves but not in America. My husband and I need to escort them to and from the school every day. The main reason is fear of kidnapping or fear that they won't be able to take care of themselves if there is a fire or an emergency at home. Despite American's fear for the safety of their children, statistics show that America has never been safer. Crime is down almost 50% since the mid-90s and violent crime against children is down 33% since 2003. Is crime down because Americans are so protective of their children or is America getting safer and perceptions are dated? ニューヨークの郊外に６歳、４歳と９ヶ月の３人の子供と住んでいる友達がいます。 長男は日中幼稚園に通い、友達はまだ園児前の二人を育てるため専業主婦をしています。 一年ほど前の話ですが、友達は長男を幼稚園から迎えに行く途中、珍しく下の子供達が寝ていたので、車に残したまま急いで用事を済ませる為郵便局に入りました。 数分後郵便局から出て来た友達は彼女の車の前で警察官に迎えられ、育児放棄で子供を引き取ると言われました。 もちろん、抵抗した彼女を警察は裁判所に案内し、裁判官に子供を連れて行かないようその場で弁護士を雇い必死に説得しました。 その日はなんとか裁判官を説得することに成功しましたが、１ヶ月後に裁判官と会うまで子供と二人っきりになることを禁止されました。 １ヶ月間親戚や友達にお願いして夫が仕事にいる間家に一緒にいるか、子供を預けることになりました。 アメリカでは子供を大人の監督無しで留守に年齢が曖昧で、ある場合は州によって異なるそうです。 制限がある州のうち平均的に１２歳ごろまでは家にいる場合でも大人の監督が必要とされているようです。 つまり、１２歳未満の子供に留守番をさせた場合警察に育児放棄で逮捕される危険性があるということです。 私は日本で育ったので子供の頃「初めてのお使い」というテレビ番組を見て育ちました。 まだ園児の子供がお母さんから預かった小銭とメモを片手に近所の八百屋にお使いを任され、その様子をカメラが追う番組です。 アメリカでは考えられない番組です。私たちは子供の学校から徒歩10分ほどのところに住んでいます。 日本なら近所の子供達と一緒に通学する距離です。 しかし、アメリカでは一人で歩くことが許されず毎日夫と二人で交代しながら学校までの送り向かいをしています。 子供の安全にこれほどに深刻になる理由として子供の誘拐の恐れや緊急時の時に身の安全ができないというのが一般的な理由です。 しかし、アメリカの犯罪率はいままでもっとも安全で、90年代と比べて犯罪率は５０％減少、子供が関わった凶悪犯罪も2003年と比べて33％減少しているそうです。 子供を一人にしないから犯罪が減少しているのか、アメリカが一般的に安全になっていて安全性についての認知が間違っているのかは議論のしどころです。

We were planning on a low-key summer vacation this year because we had already had our big trip to Japan in May. However, we had the good fortune of being invited to visit our friends who live down in Florida to spend a few days with them. We had been planning a family trip to Universal Studios Orlando for next summer but since we were going to Florida and our daughter has been reading the Harry Potter books, we decided to go to Universal Studios, as well. The kids experienced some thrill rides for the first time and they didn't like that but overall we had a great time. ５月に日本に２週間ほど帰ったので夏休みは特に旅行の計画もなく、家の近くで過ごすつもりでした。 しかし、幸運なことに夏に入ってフロリダ州に住んでいる友達に誘われ、数日フロリダに行くことになりました。 フロリダ州にはユニバーサル・スタジオのテーマパークがオーランドにあり、本当は来年の夏に行く予定を立ててました。 主人も私もハリー・ポッターが大好きで、ユニバーサル・スタジオにあるハリーポッターのアトラクションに行きたくて楽しみにしていました。 しかし、娘もハリー・ポッターを読み始めており、４冊目を読み終えたところだったこともあり、思い切ってフロリダにいる間にユニバーサル・スタジオにも行くことにしました。 子供たちは初めてローラーコースターを経験し、怖かったと言っていますが、全体的に家族みんな大満足の楽しい夏休みを過ごすことが出来ました。

The school system in the US runs on a different schedule from Japan. First, the school year starts in September in the US and runs to July. Also, in Japan, preschool is for children ages 3 through 5 and grade school starts from 6 years old. In the US, preschool starts at 4 years old and is called pre-kindergarten (pre-k). Five-year-olds are in kindergarten and first through fifth grade follows kindergarten. Pre-k is not mandatory education and in some states is not part of the public education. Luckily for us in New York they started a free-Pre-K for all children a few years ago. But, because it is still separate from the public schooling system, pre-K students have a graduation ceremony at the end of the year. This year my son graduated from pre-K. アメリカの義務教育は日本の義務教育と異なる箇所がいくつかあります。 まず、アメリカでは9月に新学期が始まり、夏休みと共に7月に一学年が終わります。 もう一つ大きく異なるところが日本では3歳から幼稚園が始まり、6歳から小学校が始まりますが、 アメリカでは幼稚園は4歳から始まりプリーキンダーガーテン（Pre-K・プリーケー)と呼びます。 5歳からはキンダーガーテン、6歳から小学校1~5年生と続きます。Pre‐Kは義務教育の一環ではないため公立のPre‐Kがない州がほとんどです。 幸いニューヨークでは数年前から公立の「Pre-K for All」が始まり、全ての4歳児が無料でPre-Kに通えることになりました。 しかし、義務教育とは別の機関のためPre-Kの最後に卒業式が行われます。 今年は息子がPre-Kから無事卒業することができました。

I tend to give my son more attention than my daughter. He's four years younger and still seems to need a lot of my attention. My daughter, being eight, is more independent and can do a lot without my help. But, I saw that she was feeling jealous of her brother so we decided to have a mommy & daughter day, just the two of us. We dressed up and I took her to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, or the MET. The MET was having a special exhibit of beautiful Catholic inspired dresses. My daughter, as with many girls her age, loves dresses and jewels and wants to become a fashion designer, so she had a wonderful time. After going to the MET, we walked through Central Park and down to 5th Avenue where we stopped by Tiffany's just to look at the beautiful jewelry. I plan on showing her the movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's" with Audrey Hepburn sometime and I can tell her they filmed that movie at the jewelry store where she wanted to buy the whole store. 8歳の娘と4歳の息子がいるのですが、 娘はほとんどのことを自分で出来るのでどうしても私は息子に気がとられ、常に娘は弟に嫉妬しています。 自分で出来てもまだお母さんと一緒に遊びたいかわいい年頃です。 解決法として彼女のリクエストで「お母さんとデート」をすることにしました。 二人でおしゃれして、メトロポリタン・ミュージアム（The MET)に行きました。 ちょうどメトロポリタン・ミュージアムではカトリック教会をテーマとしたファッション・ショーの展示が開かれていました。 典型的な女の子の娘はドレスや宝石が大好きで将来ファッションデザイナーになりたいそうです。 美術館の後はセントラル・パークを通って5番街にあるティファニーにも寄りました。 もちろん観るだけ。娘はお店ごと買いたいそうです。 そのうち一緒にオードリー・ヘップバーンの「ティファニーと朝食を」一緒に観るときに「お店ごと買いたかった」あのお店で撮影されたことを教えてあげます。
